HISTORIC DOWNTOWN

Downtown Wetaskiwin features thirteen, turn-of-the-century buildings restored to their original splendor, giving the downtown an historic but new look.  A self-guided walking tour is available between May – September where you can visit each building and read about the history.

Every Alberta town/city has a “main street”.  Wetaskiwin’s main street is fortunate to have two historic landmarks at either end.  Standing along the famous “Wetaskiwin Automile” and at the entrance to downtown is Wetaskiwin’s original water tower.  Built in 1906, and refurbished in 2005, it is now the oldest functioning Water Tower in Canada and continues to serve as part of the water system for the City.

At the far, east end of “main street”, is a building that the city is very proud of.  Originally built in 1905 it was a provincial courthouse until 1983 when a new courthouse was built. Although designated a provincial and federal historic site the building was never used again.  In 2005 the building underwent a complete restoration with two new all glass additions added to each side.  The building now serves as City Hall and is once again the crown jewel of Wetaskiwin.  Guided tours area available from May-September.
