Highly acclaimed by visitors, the museum portrays the local history in exhibits of Women of Aspenland, the war years, early local businesses, the exceptional children’s interactive centre and much more.
The International award winning Reynolds-Alberta Museum celebrates the “Spirit of the Machine” through an enormous and outstanding collection of rare and unusual cars, airplanes, tractors, and industrial giants.
Located adjacent to the Reynolds-Alberta Museum is Canada’s Aviation Hall of Fame which pays tribute to more than 200 men and women who pioneered and advanced aviation in Canada.
The Alberta Central Railway Museum is located just southeast of Wetaskiwin, and tells the story of train travel in Western Canada. Take a ride in a vintage 1926 passenger coach and experience what it was like to travel in the ‘old days’.
Downtown Wetaskiwin features thirteen turn-of-the-century buildings restored to their original splendor, giving the downtown a historic but new look. A self-guided walking tour is available between May to September where you can visit each building and read about its unique history.
Wetaskiwin’s Main Street is fortunate enough to have historic landmarks at either end of the City. Standing at the downtown entrance along the famous “Wetaskiwin Automile” is Wetaskiwin’s original water tower. Built in 1906 and refurbished in 2005, it is now the oldest functioning water tower in Canada, and continues to serve as part of the water system for the City.
At the very east end of the Main Street is another historic landmark the City is very proud of. Originally built in 1905 as a provincial courthouse, it was used until a new courthouse was built in 1983. Although the 1905 courthouse was a designated provincial and federal historic site, it sat desolate for nearly two decades until 2005, when it was completely restored to become the new home for Wetaskiwin’s City Hall. Two new glass additions were added to the east and west sides of the building for additional office space, which provides Wetaskiwin’s crown-jewel with a stunning combination of historic and modern effects. Guided tours are available from May-September.
The Edmonton International Raceway is a ¼ mile paved oval and is one of Western Canada’s premier motor sports facilities. The raceway features a great variety of race classes and is sanctioned with NASCAR, IMCA Canada, INEX Legend Cars and Baby Grand Stock Car Association.
Museums, festivals, fairs, rodeos, farmer’s markets, and a variety of sporting and other events all make Wetaskiwin an ideal destination for travel, tourism, or a new place to call home. We invite you to take a short drive to see what Wetaskiwin has to offer you – you won’t regret it!
